New Hampshire man gets 6 days jail time for asbestos violations
Paul Davis of Winchester, New Hampshire has been sentenced to a year in jail and a $3,000 fine for violating asbestos laws during an asbestos removal project. The judge suspended all but 6 days of the sentence.
Only a licensed asbestos abatement contractor can perform asbestos removal, and very specific procedures are required to ensure that asbestos fibers are not released into the air. Davis was not licensed to handle asbestos projects, and he did not follow all the required procedures.
Exposure to asbestos can cause serious illnesses—like malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Even short-term exposure can cause a risk of developing disease. Asbestos-related diseases are particularly insidious occupational injuries because disease only appears decades after the exposure.
